Breaking Gender Fashion: A.C.E

Our Favourite Boys who recently came back with a new album has once again made their ways into the hearts of not only their fans but also the netizens with their new album HJZM: The Butterfly Phantasy. The five-membered K-Pop boy group A.C.E, which consists of Jun, Donghun, Wow, Kim Byung Kwan and Chan have once again challenged the fashion norms in South Korea.

When they debuted in 2017 with Cactus, they’ve challenged wearing hot pants during their promotion weeks, and although they received many criticizing comments about it- which YG Entertainment's CEO Yang Hyun suk has also questioned, but they never shied away and still kept wearing it.

A.C.E recently brought back their hot pants during their online concert that happened on the 11th of October. The second they started the concert with a remixed version of Cactus, with similar outfits from their debut stage, it pulled on the heart strings of Choices, the name of their fans, who went crazy over it as they reminisced their debut stage.

The members of A.C.E have often gone viral and extolled for their stage outfits that range from short shorts to crop tops, to varsity jackets to harnesses, to skirts and also Korean traditional wear. Since 2017, they have continued to break gender stereotypes and also genderbend. Byeongkwan once mentioned that this isn’t just a phase for them and they don’t think there’s a specific line between masculine and feminine fashion, they’ll wear whatever that suits them.

A.C.E has tried many different kinds of fashion concepts since debut. Cactus’s concept photos contained the members wearing skirts and corsets, where their stage outfits were made up of hot pants. Their stylists also collaborated with a BDSM company for A.C.E’s harnesses during that era.

Their next comeback, Callin’ had outfits where it said the masculine side of the members with varsity jackets and also opened-back silk shirts with an arm cover. But instead of promoting for four weeks, they promoted only for two weeks and the members went off their respective ways to survival shows to gain more recognition for A.C.E.

During Take Me Higher, the four remaining members of A.C.E challenged the cheerful summer concept with crop-tops, flowery robes, painted nails and also wore pretty gemstone earrings in both their live stages and the album concept photos. Member Byeong kwan also had colourful thread extensions and a cute braid added to his pink hair while Donghun had his hair cut short and dyed a shade of bright red.

After Chan had returned from the disbandment of his project group UNB, Undercover and Savage were released. The latter was a follow up song of Undercover and they both had similar fashion concepts of crop-tops, leather jackets, chains and harnesses. Byeong kwan once again left a big impact on viewers as in Undercover, he wore crop-tops while having his hair tied into pigtails and in Savage, he had long hair extensions that were tied into braids that are similar to Harley Quinn. While Wow played Joker as he rocked the neon green hair that was later changed to neon purple and also silver.

Their latest comeback, Goblin (Favorite Boys), Chan mentioned that it is the album with the most concepts as they included many traditional-to-modern styles in their music video. During the bridge, Jun and Chan were seen sitting together with the modern version of the top-knots men wore during the Joseon dynasty in Korea, dressed in completely see-through grey hanboks with sparkly pink eyeshadow and flower contact lenses. Jun also had beaded eyelashes which he really enjoyed although it was a tedious job for his stylists. Their stage outfits consist of a white outfit that shows off the Korean tradition which also showcases the member’s physiques and temporary tattoos. Another outfit would be a mixture of rock band t-shirts such as Metallica, Guns’ N Roses and Oasis with the traditional Korean wear, hanbok as an outerwear.

When talking about A.C.E and their fashion, the members have never been shy or embarrassed about wearing these outfits and mentioned they actually like them. Donghun previously mentioned that their tracks are always strong and have at least one unique characteristic, therefore their outfits have no choice but to be as strong for them to match the concept. Their company, Beat Interactive’s flexibility allows A.C.E the freedom to have an opinion on their outfits, everything they say and do are all from their genuine selves. Not only did they learn more about fashion, in an Allure interview, A.C.E mentioned that at first they didn’t know anything about makeup at all, but now, they apply their foundation themselves and sometimes they even apply their own makeup we’ve seen on them at the airport!
