American singer, R. Kelly was reported to be beaten by another inmate in prison, and his lawyer demanded his immediate release.

R. Kelly's lawyer, Steve Greenberg, said that his client was assaulted at a Chicago correctional facility, where Kelly is imprisoned for sex crimes.

Mr. Greenberg shared such a statement through his Twitter account and further stated that how much Kelly was injured is yet to be known.

R. Kelly is imprisoned for a number of sex crimes, including child abuse and prostitution, and is continuously claiming his innocence. The news about Kelly's assault was first reported by the U.S entertainment media, TMZ. The media reported that Kelly's fellow inmate attacked Kelly, who was sitting on the bed. Mr. Greenberg argued that "there were always fans who supported R. Kelly outside the facility" and that "they shut down the entire correctional facility".

The inmate was reportedly outraged by the fact that the warden banned prison visits temporarily after numerous fans of Kelly protested outside the facility.

R. Kelly, one of the top R&B stars who represent the 1990s, has been in prison for more than a year, waiting for the result of the trial regarding sex crimes lawsuits in Illinois, Minnesota, and New York. Previously, he requested bail three times but got all of them rejected. The Brooklyn court explained the reasons for the rejection, claiming that "there is a high possibility that Kelly buys the witnesses", considering Kelly's past being accused of recruiting women and girls to have sex with him for a long period of time.

Though the trial is scheduled for next month, Kelly's lawyer is demanding Kelly's release until the trial for his safety. "The government cannot guarantee Kelly's safety and will not give him the chance to make an argument in court", Mr. Greenberg wrote on Twitter. He further elaborated by claiming "one must not detain a person indefinitely in a situation where the proper procedure cannot be provided".

Mr. Greenberg claimed that he "received conflicting reports on the extent of Kelly's injuries" and that he was "not provided any information from the correctional office". "I hope that he wasn't seriously injured," he added.
